PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kenny Pickett is next door, flinging footballs for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jordan Addison is in Southern California, lured away by the chance to play in a bigger market with all the bells and whistles (and endorsement opportunities, apparently) that come with it.

The Pittsburgh teammates they left behind insist they are cheering for both, and eager to prove last year’s breakout season — when Pickett mounted an unlikely Heisman Trophy campaign, Addison won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver and the Panthers roared to their first ACC title — is no fluke.

The Chicago White Sox have signed Elvis Andrus for the remainder of the season, adding a veteran shortstop with All-Star Tim Anderson sidelined by a finger injury. Andrus, who turns 34 next week, recently cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics. Andrus gives the White Sox experience with Anderson expected to be out until late September after having surgery for a torn ligament in his left middle finger on Aug. 11. Chicago also optioned infielder Lenyn Sosa to Triple-A Charlotte before its game at Cleveland.

Experience is No. 25 BYU’s biggest strength entering its final season as an independent before joining the Big 12 in 2023. The Cougars return 18 starters from a team that posted 10 wins and finished in the AP Top 25 for a second consecutive season. Several key veteran playmakers will lead the offense, including quarterback Jaren Hall, tight end Isaac Rex, and receivers Gunner Romney and Puka Nacua. BYU used the transfer portal to find a capable successor for Tyler Allgeier in the backfield, bringing in Cal's Christopher Brooks. BYU opens the season at South Florida on Sept. 3.

The coach for a Little League World Series player from Utah who seriously injured his head when he fell out of his top bunk in dorms at the world series complex says he has FaceTimed with the boy. Mark Ence says he told his 12-year-old player, Easton Oliverson, that he loved him. He says Easton told him he loves him back. Easton has been recovering in the hospital since the accident. Ence says the boy has begun walking and walked to the bathroom on his own Friday morning.

Primoz Roglic is off to a good start in his quest to win an unprecedented fourth straight Spanish Vuelta title as his Jumbo-Visma team won the team time trial in the opening stage in the Netherlands. Jumbo-Visma finished 13 seconds ahead of team Ineos Grenadiers and 14 seconds in front of Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl. Roglic’s teammate Robert Gesink ended with the leader’s red jersey in his ninth participation in the Grand Tour race.

There was some pushing, shoving and a couple of swings between the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons. And also some practice. The teams got together Friday for the first of two joint sessions at the Jets’ practice facility and the tempers matched the sultry heat early on. New York’s defensive line and Atlanta’s offensive line got into two shoving matches during positional drills that were quickly diffused. During 11-on-11 team drills Jets defensive lineman Bradlee Anae got into it with a Falcons player and appeared to throw some punches. The team drills on that field were paused for a few minutes before practice ran clean the rest of the way.

Charlene Curtis, the first Black women’s head basketball coach in the ACC, has died. She was 67, and died after a battle with cancer, the conference announced. Curtis was the head coach at Wake Forest from 1997-2004, after head coaching stops at Radford and Temple, where she also was the first African-American head women’s basketball coach. She worked in the ACC league offices for 11 years, retiring in 2019 as the supervisor of officials for women’s basketball. Curtis played basketball at Radford shortly after the passage of Title IX in 1972 and become that school’s first 1,000-point scorer and a member of its Hall of Fame.

The New York Giants have had a rash of injuries at center in training camp. Since camp opened in late July, New York has seen five centers hurt at some point. Coach Brian Daboll says the Giants will not have starter Jon Feliciano and backups Ben Bredeson, Garrett McGhin, Jamil Douglas and Shane Lemieux for Sunday's preseason game against Cincinnati. The injuries will force Max Garcia, who had been running with the first team at left guard, to move to center.

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Laviska Shenault is scheduled to make his preseason debut against Pittsburgh Saturday night. It might also serve as an audition for the rest of league. That’s because Shenault is fighting for a roster spot. A second-round draft pick in 2020, Shenault has 121 receptions for 1,219 yards and five touchdowns in two seasons. But the Colorado standout nicknamed “Hulk Viska” is in a position battle that’s down to four guys vying for two spots. Shenault, Jeff Cotton, Tim Jones and Laquon Treadwell are trying to make the team behind Christian Kirk, Zay Jones and Marvin Jones.

The home of the Air Force Falcons turns 60 this season. Falcon Stadium has provided quite an advantage given its higher elevation. That’s especially true in the 15 seasons under coach Troy Calhoun as his teams have gone 66-23 inside the picturesque stadium. The Falcons and their option offense boast a strong returning nucleus. The list includes fullback Brad Roberts, linebacker Vince Sanford and offensive lineman Isaac Cochran. They each earned a spot on the preseason All-Mountain West team. Air Force is predicted to finish second behind Boise State in the Mountain Division of the conference. The Falcons open by hosting Northern Iowa on Sept. 3.

Former Olympic diver Jan Hempel has accused the German swimming federation of failing to heed his complaints of being sexually abused for years by former coach Werner Langer. Hempel represented Germany at four Olympic Games. He says Langer repeatedly abused him for 14 years starting in 1982, when he was 11 years old. Hempel tells news agency DPA that “the federation suggested to me that if I spread that around, it would put our sport in danger and then you can’t take part in your sport anymore." Hempel first made his allegations against Langer on Thursday in a documentary by public broadcaster ARD, which also documented other former swimmers’ allegations of abuse by unnamed coaches across the sport.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has been fined 35,000 pounds  ($41,000) and given a one-match touchline ban over his scuffle with Tottenham counterpart Antonio Conte after Sunday’s Premier League derby. Conte was fined 15,000 pounds ($18,000) but avoided a touchline ban after both managers admitted improper conduct in the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge. Tuchel’s touchline ban has been suspended temporarily, though, pending the full written reasons for the decision. That allows the Chelsea manager to take his place in the dugout for Sunday’s Premier League game at Leeds.

New coach John Wroblewski is itching to leave his hotel room in Buffalo, New York, and finally rejoin the U.S. women's hockey team in Denmark. The team is preparing to compete at the world championships next week. Wroblewski is in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19, and says he's aiming to leave on Monday. Wroblewski was hired in May. He has been tasked with shaping a team that's settled for silver in its past two international competitions. The Americans open the 10-nation tournament against Japan on Thursday.

Gavin Green hit a couple of eagles to break the course record with a 9-under 63 Friday and take a three-shot lead after the second round of the Czech Masters. Green eagled the par-5 first and 10th holes and added five birdies in his flawless round for a 14-under total of 130 at the Albatross Golf Resort near Prague. He also made a couple of eagles in the opening round on Thursday but they were accompanied by three bogeys as well four birdies. Two-time champion Thomas Pieters, England’s Richard Mansell and Germany’s Marcel Schneider are all tied for second.

New Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire says his job is to accelerate the process to win a Big 12 title. Tech finished 7-6 overall last year. McGuire is already building a solid foundation in his first college head coaching job. The Texas native won three high school championships before his transition to college coaching the past five years at Baylor. The season opener Sept. 3 against Murray State is the first of seven home games for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech will face No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 10 Baylor and Texas all at home.

Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. It was the second arrest in as many years for Ozuna. He was arrested on May 29, 2021, on charges of aggravated assault by strangulation and battery. Those charges were dropped after he completed a pretrial diversion program. Now Ozuna is facing more legal problems after his DUI arrest. In a statement released by the team, the Braves say they are “obviously disappointed” by the arrest. Ozuna also was charged with failure to maintain lane. He was released on $1,830 bond.

Sonny Dykes has opened things up since becoming TCU's coach. There was a sometimes carnival-like atmosphere during spring practice with fans surrounding the field. Dykes was 30-18 the past four seasons at SMU. TCU was 23-24 during that same time. Patterson and the school mutually agreed to part ways last October. TCU has a Friday night opener at Colorado on Sept. 2.

No. 10 Baylor has a new starting quarterback in Blake Shapen. Last year's season-opening QB, Gerry Bohanon, is now at South Florida. Shapen completed 72% of his passes with five touchdowns and no interceptions in limited action last season, but that included being the Big 12 championship game MVP in one of his two starts. Baylor is picked to win the Big 12 again this season. The Bears open the season against Albany with a schedule that includes a number of tough road games.

NASCAR has a record seven different countries represented in Sunday's race at Watkins Glen International, and the headliner is 2007 Formula One champion Kimi Raikkonen. His Cup debut has the NASCAR regulars excited to race against the Finn, and that includes Kyle Larson. The reigning Cup champion says he's looking forward to studying Raikkonen's data and understanding how the road racer attacks the course. But with so many newcomers in the field as NASCAR winds down its regular season, those battling for the final playoff spot are skittish to race against those unfamiliar with NASCAR.

Guatemalan police used tear gas and made six arrests as rival soccer fans clashed ahead of a regional qualifying game between Municipal of Guatemala and Olimpia of Honduras. Police say at least seven people were injured in the disturbance late Thursday and a local hospital says one of them was shot. All of those arrested are Honduran fans. The match was part of a tournament to qualify for the CONCACAF club championship. It ended 2-2 after two Olimpia players were sent off. Former Houston Dynamo player Boniek García and Jerry Bengston, formerly of the New England Revolution, both got red cards.

Oklahoma State came within inches of winning the Big 12 title and likely claiming a spot in the College Football Playoff last season. The 12th-ranked Cowboys believe they can go further this season. They finished last season with a 12-2 record and No. 7 final ranking. Quarterback Spencer Sanders is back for his fourth season. He’s coming off a monster game in a 37-35 Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame. He's one of 10 returning offensive starters. Oklahoma State opens at home Sept. 1 against Central Michigan.

Milwaukee Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio is set to join the board of directors at English soccer club Norwich. The club says it called a shareholder meeting on Sept. 12 with a resolution to appoint Attanasio as a director. He was first linked in May with the club. It has been majority owned for 26 years by television chef Delia Smith and her husband. The second-tier club played in the Premier League in three of the past seven seasons but was relegated each time.

Former major leaguer Mark DeRosa has been named Team USA manager for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. DeRosa’s professional coaching debut puts him in charge of the defending world champions next spring. He is currently a co-host of MLB Network’s daily morning program, MLB Central. The 47-year-old DeRosa played for eight teams during 16 years in the majors, batting .268 with 100 homers and 494 RBIs in 1,241 games. The U.S. won the title in 2017, beating Puerto Rico 8-0 in the title game at Dodger Stadium.

Much has changed for Oklahoma in the past year. The Sooners’ run of conference championships ended at six last season right before coach Lincoln Riley left for Southern California. Quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Spencer Rattler transferred elsewhere. Oklahoma hired Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables to steady the ship. The Sooners are picked to finish behind Baylor this season in the race for the Big 12 title. The ninth-ranked Sooners open the season Sept. 3 against UTEP.

The Champions League is staying on CBS in the United States for six more years. A person familiar with the deal has told The Associated Press that CBS' parent company Paramount is paying $250 million a year to renew its prime European soccer rights through 2030. That is an increase of 250% from the previous deal, starting in the 2024-25 season when a new competition format creates a 50% increase in the number of games. In May, CBS drew a U.S.-record for a Champions League final broadcast in English. The average audience was 2.76 million for Real Madrid’s 1-0 win over Liverpool.

Hunter Dekkers is set to become Iowa State's first new starting quarterback since the middle of the 2018 season. He takes over for the program's winningest quarterback in Brock Purdy. Coach Matt Campbell says was impressed with how Dekkers handled himself playing meaningful snaps against Iowa and Oklahoma last year.  Dekkers was a four-star recruit coming out of the small northwest Iowa town of Hawarden and has appeared in seven games over two seasons. The Cyclones open the season Sept. 3 at home against Southeast Missouri.

After a second eight-win season in three years, Kansa State appears poised to push Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas for the top of the Big 12 this season. The Wildcats have All-America candidate Deuce Vaughn in the backfield, Felix Anudike-Uzomah at defensive end and talent all over the roster. Success could depend on whether Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez can succeed at quarterback. Kansas State opens the season against South Dakota, former Big 12 rival Missouri and Tulane.

Texas starts the season unranked after a 5-7 finish in 2021. And yet, there is optimism in Austin. Coach Steve Sarkisian will be leaning heavily on running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Xavier Worthy  to turn things around. The Longhorns will find out right away how good they are: No. 1 Alabama visits on Sept. 10 in the second game of the season.

Kansas made strides last season under first-year coach Lance Leipold. The Jayhawks stunned Texas in overtime in one of the biggest upsets in college football. They took TCU and West Virginia down to the wire in their final two games, too. And despite only two wins all season, that strong finish has given the Jayhawks the rare feeling of positive momentum despite questions on defense. The Jayhawks open Sept. 2 against Tennessee Tech.

Young attacking midfielder Reinier will play for Girona this season on a loan from Real Madrid. The 20-year-old Brazilian arrived in Madrid at the beginning of 2020 but had played the last two seasons on a loan at Borussia Dortmund. He signed with Madrid from Brazilian club Flamengo for a reported fee of 30 million euros. His contract with Madrid ends in 2026. Reinier arrived not long after Madrid signed Brazilian youngsters Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo for 45 million euros each. Reinier was a member of Brazil’s Olympic squad that won the gold medal at the Tokyo Games last year.

Urawa Reds has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Asian Champions League. The Japanese team routed Malaysia’s Johor Darul Tazim 5-0 on Friday. Thailand’s Pathum United also comfortably won its round-of-16 game. It beat Hong Kong’s Kitchee 4-0. Jeonbuk Motors of South Korea and Japan’s Vissel Kobe won Thursday to complete the eastern zone quarterfinal lineup. The draw is on Saturday with games taking place in Japan two days later.  The tournament is divided into two geographic regions. Round-of-16 games in the western half of the draw will not be held until Feb. 2023.

Neal Brown took himself out of the equation after West Virginia’s offense struggled last season. The fourth-year coach handed play-calling duties in January to new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell. At Southern Cal last season, Harrell's offense led the Pac-12 in passing and total offense. West Virginia sure could use his help. The Mountaineers were eighth in Big 12 total offense. Harrell is being reunited with quarterback JT Daniels, who played briefly under Harrell in 2019 before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Daniels transferred to West Virginia from national champion Georgia. He's competing with three others for the starting job.

COSTA MESA, Calif. — It was a mixed bag during practice this week against the Los Angeles Chargers for Dallas Cowboys first-round pick Tyler Smith.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Arthur Smith is not a fan of narratives. The Falcons coach especially does not like “easy” or “lazy” narratives. Unfortunately for Smith, his team has served up plenty of those. The Falcons were a bad football team in his first season. They are going to be bad again.

If the 49ers cannot sell the Cleveland Browns on trading for Jimmy Garoppolo now, then the Niners’ quarterback cannot be sold.

Knowledge is power and the greatest asset you can acquire in order to compete for a fantasy football championship.

TAMPA, Fla. — The 40-year-old photo, snapped during the 1982 Miami football team’s media day, features five quarterbacks flanking their position coach. Three of the five would go on to lengthy — and in one case, legendary — NFL careers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One morning during Tom Watson’s senior year (1966-1967) at Kansas City's Pembroke Country Day, Kansas City Chiefs icon Len Dawson was a guest speaker at the school now known as Pembroke Hill.

PHILADELPHIA — Dave Shaw did not know anything about baseball when he arrived 10 years ago in Philadelphia for the final stop in a cross-country vacation. A friend had an extra ticket to a Phillies-Pirates game in June 2012, so Shaw took a cab to South Philly before flying home to England.

World heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has maintained a similar weight for his rematch with Anthony Joshua. The Ukrainian boxer tipped the scales at 100.5 kilograms or 221.5 pounds at the weigh-in. Usyk weighed in at 100 kilograms for the first fight in London in September. He won that by a unanimous decision. Usyk will be defending his WBA, IBF and WBO belts in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Joshua came in at 110.9 kilograms or 244.5 pounds. That is slightly heavier than the first fight.

SAN DIEGO — Two sinkers fluttered away from the strike zone — outside, then inside — before a change-up dived below it.
